Doing so will greet you with an error message from Epic saying that it’s not up to them, and in order to play Fortnite on Switch you’ll have to create a new account entirely. This is not news to Xbox players who have tried something similar with a PS4 account, but with many PS4 players trying to play their current Fortnite account on the go with Switch, it’s maddening.

Unfortunately, the first thing that might occur to you to try is not going to work, and is just going to be a waste of your time.

You cannot simply un-link your PS4-linked account from the platform, and then use that account to play on Nintendo Switch. If you do this, it will wipe your account from PS4 (not permanently, you won’t lose anything), but it will still not be able to be linked to Switch after that.

This seemed crazy to me at first, so I thought maybe it was some sort of caching issue that would take time to settle, and maybe it would work a few hours later. But then I realized why this restriction exists. Because if you were able to un-link your PS4 account to play on Switch, you could just essentially un-link and re-link whenever you wanted, which would be a way to get around the anti-cross-progression system that Sony has mandated be in place.

The “logic” of this, however, is lost on fans who are simply furious about this entire situation. This latest reveal makes it look like Sony is monopolizing Fortnite accounts that weren’t even theirs to begin with. For instance, my main platform for Fortnite from the start has been PC, but once it came to console, I linked it to my PS4 and played some games there just to check it out. But now because I’ve done that, even though 98% of my games and progress has been made on PC, I cannot use this account on Switch no matter what I do.

This is a level beyond simply “You can’t cross-play with friends on different consoles.” This is Sony doing active harm to Fortnite, other consoles, and all players with this restriction. I said yesterday that I hoped that this would be a tipping point for Sony to wake up and realize that it needs to give a little in this cross-play debate. We’ve heard nothing from them about this yet (I’ve asked, and am waiting to hear back), but until they decide to budge, Epic’s hands are tied, and many Fortnite accounts are simply being held hostage and will never be able to make their way to the Switch. Even if this gets fixed eventually, we might end up with a situation where players have wasted their time starting a new Switch account and making progress there (and spending money), only to find that eventually Sony relents and that new account is now pointless.

What a terrible situation all around. But even if you want to disconnect your PS4 link out of spite, just know that it’s not going to help you play on Switch.

Update: I'm hearing reports that players contacting Sony support are being told that the lockout is because of Epic. While Epic is saying they can't do anything about it. Seems likely that Epic is technically the one instituting the lockout, but it's because Sony is mandating it, so they could both be right. But ultimately, it still comes back to Sony. Epic clearly wants cross-play and account sharing everywhere, that's not even a debate.
